Olhão Garden
Among Agadir's beautifully restored or completely new gardens is the one named Olhao, intended to mark the twinning between this Portuguese city in the Algarve and the martyred town of 1960, and more broadly to trace the history of Santa Cruz de Cap Ghir. Work to restore the architectural heritage of the Jardin d'Olhão is well underway. But it is vital that the Agadir Souss-Massa Aménagement company in charge of carrying out the work preserves as much as possible of the evidence of Berber stone art (our photo above shows the small Museum of Memory) that gave this garden in the Amazigh capital its personality.
Created in 1992, the Olhao Garden had aged. It was therefore timely that it should receive a facelift as part of the spectacular Urban Development Program currently underway. The images released by those in charge of the rehabilitation project (our photo) show a desire for modernization that is, in principle, welcome.
The renovated amphitheatre will feature grass seating. The artificial lake will feature a footbridge (our image). Children will enjoy wooden merry-go-rounds and play areas. An area will be reserved for Mediterranean flora, and plazas will feature pergolas. Marble benches, drinking-water fountains, litter garbage cans, signage and atmospheric lighting will all contribute to making the Jardin d'Olhao a pleasant place to relax. Work began last year and is expected to take two years. No date has yet been set for reopening.
Animal Park in Agadir
Crocoparc Agadir
Crocoparc Agadir is Morocco's first crocodile zoo, opened in May 2015 on the outskirts of Agadir. It is home to 325 Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) within a botanical garden spanning around 4 hectares.
Since its opening, Crocoparc has been home to new animal species, including giant tortoises (Centrochelys sulcata), green iguanas (Iguana iguana), giant pythons (Malayopython reticulatus), anacondas (Eunectes murinus) and white-brushed marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).
The park is located on the outskirts of Agadir, in the commune of Drargua, along the Route Nationale 8 towards Marrakech.
Crocoparc was created on the initiative of an old family from Agadir, and was designed by Luc Fougeirol, a reptile expert and crocodile enthusiast from an early age1. In 1994, he had already created La Ferme aux Crocodiles in Pierrelatte, the first park of its kind in Europe, then participated in the creation of La Planète des Crocodiles in Civaux and the crocodile farm at Djerba Explore in Djerba.
The design of Crocoparc Agadir was guided by the desire to help save the Nile crocodile, a protected species, and to enable the public to discover the animal and its way of life, with the help of signposts and animators. For the crocodile, it's a sort of return to its roots, as it was still living in southern Morocco in the 1950s-19513.
Crocoparc is available to scientists and students who, with access to the various crocodile living areas, including the nursery, can study crocodile reproduction.
