The Karaouiyne mosque
The Karaouiyne mosque is the mosque around which the Medina was built.
Near the Moulay Idriss sanctuary, the Karouanais mosque (opposite the Andalusian mosque located on the other bank) represents Islamic science with its scholars and its orthodoxy. It is the Friday mosque where Muslims come together for common prayer.
Built in 1144, it can accommodate up to 20,000 worshipers under its 16 naves supported by 270 finely decorated columns.
Around the mosque, the Karaouiyne University of Fez was created, one of the oldest universities in the world alongside that of Bologna in Italy.
The foundation of the mosque to which the university will be added dates from 859. It is the work of Fatima al-Fihri, daughter of a rich immigrant businessman from Kairouan (today in Tunisia).
